Peter Hale's Poems

The Mad Hatter's Tea Natter

Alice strolled down a long winding lane

and saw the tea party of the mad hatter

three creatures drank tea right out in the rain

dormouse, march hare, and mad hatter having a natter.

Alice thought the behaviour of all was insane

the march hare and hatter continued to chatter

march hare and hatter seemed not to engage their brain

instead march hare continued to chat to the latter

whose hat was forced down and failing to drain

much more talk and his hat would only get flatter.

Alice suggested his hat would not regain

its shape while the rain continued to batter

wind, rain and hail caused Alice such pain

as the rain came down and continued to splatter

the hatter was upset because he was so vain

and his hat was broken and continued to tatter.

The hatter ate hot tarts so warmth he would gain

but Alice told him he would only get fatter

his good sense was lost as he went against the grain

to steal from a queen who might chop the head of a hatter

eating tarts he stole from the queen through her reign.

They moved 'round and knocked things that fell with a clatter

the teapot fell down and started to stain

and the tarts were spun 'round on their silver platter

the dormouse hid away from the noise and the rain

as rain fell down with pitter and patter.

Alice and dormouse were the only ones sane

and mad hatter threw tarts angrily at 'er.

The wind was so fast it blew over a vane

Alice left for shelter away from the hatter

from those that still would stay out on the plain

and not have the common sense to stay in through the splatter.

The patience of Alice had seen too much strain

from the chatter, the hatter, and the heavy rains' patter.

She went off to find some sheltered terrain

away from the dormouse, the march hare and hatter.

The dormouse in his teapot now slept through the chattery refrain

as the other two argued and knocked dishes which did scatter

they were hare brained and hat rained and fighting again.

Inspired by the work of Lewis Carroll.

The Trial of the Knave of Hearts

In Wonderland there was a large palace

where a trial took place watched by the mad hatter

with him was the sleeping dormouse

and the late arriving march hare.

Another later arrival was Alice

who came in from the heavy splatter

looking for shelter of a house

which she then found inside there.

The Queen drank wine from her chalice

but dropped it with a heavy clatter

that startled the poor sleeping mouse

whose waking times were very rare.

The knave of hearts was blamed with malice

by the guilty tart thief hatter

who acted as a complete louse

in blaming the knave, it was not fair.

The hatter it seemed was very jealous

because he would keep getting fatter

the thin knave weighed less than the mouse

steel tarts? The knave would never dare.

To Alice it seemed to be quite callous

to blame the knave for being flatter

it was a very silly grouse

for cards are thin and prone to tear.

At this time the dream of Alice

ended as the rain did scatter

she woke in the open from the waters' douse

Alice awoke with soaking wet hair.

Alice thought about that palace

As the rain fell with a patter

While she stood she saw a mouse

And two strange creatures an odd pair

I Travelled In Space

I have a story for you

Of the night I travelled to

Space up above the sky

No hint of a lie

I tell you its true

That last night I flew

Reached space very soon

And stood on the moon

I landed on Mars

And visited the stars

I made the long trip

In a gleaming spaceship

Then I floated to see

The planet Mercury

And not too much later

I landed in a crater

I was the first one

To loop 'round the sun

The first of my genus

In the clouds of Venus

I flew to Alpha Centauri

This is my true story

Its no Jackanory

and Proxima Centauri

I was the first man

At Aldebaran

I took a different track

To fly my way back

I wanted to go

To purple white Pluto

Found Neptunes' moon Triton

Sought Saturns' moon Titan

Went to Jupiters' Io

and landed on a volcano

I wanted to know

What its surface would show

You ought to believe me

When I say what I did see

The places you could be

And the way that it should be

If we went out to space

The whole human race

Right up from this place

And built a moon base.

For my wonderful wife

Thank you for being my wonderful wife

And guiding me through my life

In the five years to our anniversary

You have helped me through adversity

You are so lovely and beautiful

And helpful kind and dutiful

You are so artistic and clever

I know our love is strong forever

You make me so delighted and proud

And our five years of love we've avowed

On earth we will strengthen our love

Until called to meet in the above
